Today was my day off this week, and I hit the road to Seward for some family time. Another buddy of mine, Bill, took out 4 people this morning. He got one bite, and they hooked the fish and got it. 2 other boats went out, but Bill was the only one to catch one this morning. I will be out the rest of the week and plan on getting some of my own, so pay attention to the report!
Happy Memorial Day everyone! We can never say thank you enough for the sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform - and their families.
It was a slow day on the river today. I got to Burma Landing around Noon and there were no fish taken out. We left about 1 o'clock and fished a lot of holes, but didn't get any bites, let alone any fish. The river was busy with people, and there was some wildlife. We were lucky enough to see 5 moose, all cows with calves. The water levels seemed to be much higher than last week.
Today I fished with Wayne, Jeff and Jared. We back trolled for 4 hours without a bite. At 10:00am we got a bite and landed a King Salmon. We did not have another bite after that. There were 3 other guides on the river which each guide boat pulled in 1. I didn't see anyone else with a fish. After checking my bait station I pulled out and learned there were a total of 6 King's caught today.

.Today, my buddy Ben and I fished the Little Su. 3 holes into it Ben hooked and landed a 23 lb King Salmon. We paddled the hole 1 more time then decided we should try our luck at the bear bait station. It had been a little over a week since I last checked it and still had no hits. So we put some new stuff out for the bears and made a blind for the tree stand. I do plan to guide my first trip this Friday and have high hopes for some success. It seems the water color has changed and I felt as if it looked to be rising a little. We did have grass and sticks on our lines every time we reeled in which is a sign of rising water. I'll post again after Friday’s trip
It's starting to look good for king season this year. A buddy, Mike Davis, went fishing at the Deshka last night with his daughter Madison (5 years old) and managed to pull in a king in the evening. He then spent the night in the boat and pulled in another around 10am. He said he saw many other boats catching some fish. The only other guide boat he saw was Millers River Boat Service and he had no fish at that time he saw him. I would assume there will be many fisherman and boaters out this weekend due to an ADN article and the word of king salmon hitting rivers in the Mat-Su Valley.
My plans consist of spending the last weekend with the family at the island catching rainbow and landlocked Salmon at Diamond Lake. A trip to the river with Da Da's boat is not out of the question but doubtful. I do plan on fishing daily after the family leaves on Tuesday night.
I went to the little su on 5-14 and fished 2 spots up stream and did not get a bite. I have herd there had been kings caught on the little su and the Deshka already. Time to get out there and give it a try.
The Ice on Diamond lake went out two days ago. The wind picked up and helped blow away some ice. I would assume there should be some decent trout fishing on some mat-valley lakes. Also, talketna River should be a good place to try for some rainbow. I'll be going to the Little Su this weekend with the family before they leave for CO for a month.
Yesterday, I got my boat out and tried it out. Still have a bit more to do before I'm ready to fish. I do plan on going to the little su next weekend. I did here there have been boats out on the little su already so I guess the ice has melted. I plan on taking the wife and kids the bear bait and show them around the woods.
I do believe it is too early to catch a salmon at the Little Su. I might try my luck at other rivers early in the season. Last year my first trip was on May 15th and we caught a rainbow and had no other bits. If your planning on booking a charter in May be prepared to fish all 6 hours with little to no action. However, there are more wildlife since there is little boat traffic on the river.
