Well, on this day last year I used 18 gallan's of gas to go looking for fish upstream and never even seen one. This year I talked to one other guide and he took 4 people fishing and caught 4. This doesn't mean the fishing is way better than last year, just that there are a few more fish upstream of the landing than last year. I am going to fish a few holes tomorrow on my way upstream to take my bear bait down. Most likely by myself so I will be able to try other methods of fishing and maybe hook into one. If I don't, this will be the first time I have not reeled in a king salmon on the Little Su since I can remember, at leat 14 years of guiding. On a side note, the river is 2 inches higher than it was on June 22 and just as clear (so I here).
Today, Ema, Rhett, Bekah, Grandma Gloria and I went to the Little Su to try to catch a King Salmon. We went got to the fee booth and found that there were only 8 fish caught and 40 fisherman at 4:30pm. The river is doing as expected by me and will not get better fishing. The last week of guiding we were catching the 21-26 pound female king salmon which means the peak of the run is here and there will not be many more fish entering the river. Their are a few guides still trying to catch the last of the salmon but I have chosen to not guide anymore trips to try and preserve the few kings still in the river. I have noticed many local fisherman in boats driving upstream using bait and catching fish (which is illegal). However, there is little law enforcement from the park service and state troopers so those illegal fisherman have a good chance of getting away with what they are doing. In my opinion, they should restrict the river to no fishing until July 14th to protect the king run. Needless to say, our fishing trip consisted of 4 fisherman, 3 good producing holes, 1 hour of playing on the beach and mom casting spinners, and no bites or fish.
When we got home we rode 4 wheelers to the Moor's house and let Ema ride the horse and Rhett chase the cat's around the barn and try to feed hay to the horse's. Kathy and Gary are about the nicest neighbors someone could have!!
If anyone is interested in Silver fishing I have a few morning's open and I am willing to do night trips also. Contact me for details about the night trip's and availability for them.

Today was Ema's first round of golf. We played 9 holes at a par 3. She did really good considering she has not hit a ball for a year. We lost track of what score she got but Bekah got a 52 and I got a 36.
The Little Su is still producing about 2 bites and 1-2 fish per trip according to 3 other guides that fished today.
Today Bill (another guide on the river) and I drove North a couple hours to check on his cabin. We rode the wheelers in about 5 miles through mud and swamp water. After checking out the cabin we both realized we were old because napping was #1 on the list of things to do. After about an hour we geared up for the Grayling tournament at a near by lake along the trail. Bill played the home court fishing lake advantage and beat me 9-7 fish. Needless to say we had a great time.
Little Su----The report today was that they caught more but most of the fish caught were small (under 21 inches) with a few averaged sized ones. The guides may have had more success in the morning due to not as much fishing competition among guides.
I am still looking to fill up a few mornings for silver season and an occasional afternoon. So if anyone is interested give me a call. Thanks
Yesterday morning---Caught 1 with 4 people and 3 other bites
Yesterday Night----Caught 1 on a 3 hour trip with 5 people and 2 others on.
6-18-10------Morning landed none and had 3 bits (First skunk of the year)
6-18-10------Night 3 hour trip and didn't even get a bite (fishing sucks and second skunk of the year)
6-17-10------Morning we snagged one in the last hole and released it.
6-16-10------Morning we caught 2
Not vary good fishing right now. There is no talk of the river closing anymore because of the Deshka getting 2000 fish through the weir a day. Looks like another poor run for us. I am now telling people that things are not going to change and to expect 0-2 fish per trip with 0-3 bites per trip. I think I will start getting excited that I won't have to paddle much anymore and just wait for silver season. Give me a call if you would like to chat about fishing. Thanks for following the reports. Here are some pic's of past clients that oked the idea of me putting their face on my report page.
Yesterday morning trip caught 4 fish by 10am with 4 clients with the biggest weighing 29 lbs and total weight of all 4 fish was 93 lbs. Mom caught the big one of the day and Justin, Joe and Ron caught similar fish. The night trip (Ben, Lane and a friend) also got their limit of 3 fish with the biggest weighing 40 lbs (biggest yet). Ben maned up and didn't use a net to land the big 40 ponder. He killed it with the beating stick and reached in and grabbed it. To make a long story short, it was tangled up in a snag and so was the net. We had a fun and great day.
Today I thought we would sleigh them but only managed 1 bite and one 25 ponder. Back to normal. Rained all night and still raining. First time all year. Maybe the water will rise and let more fish through. Not going to close the river for a while because of all the fish that went through the weir at the Deshka. Oh well.
This is Rebecca, Matt's wife. He has been staying at the river and doing quite a bit of fishing and some hunting. I have been getting daily updates, but haven't been able to post them here as frequently.
There are definitely more fish coming into the river and the guides are starting to catch more but there are still way more fisherman fishing and coming home empty-handed. Today there were about 200 fisherman and only about 30 fish recorded. Matt's boat caught a 29 pounder today (biggest of the year), they called is Hog Boy. Still not sure of emergency closure but Matt said they would be crazy not to.
Yesterday Matt's boat caught 2 fish with 3 other bites. The day before that there was 1 fish caught with 4 other bites. Here are some pictures from the last couple days.
Today we caught two fish. We had another big one on that got away as well as two other bites.
According to sources the Little Su is being looked at hard. It seems they will announce an Emergency Closure on Monday the 14th and the river will be closed by Wednesday. That is all the news I have for now and I will update as I can.
Anyone booked with me for later in the season may want to think about moving their trip up sooner. Call me for details on availability. 907-244-0607 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting 907-244-0607 end_of_the_skype_highlighting
Today's fishing trip came back with 1 King and 5 other bites.
There is talk of closing the river on the 14th.
Me and another guide's son, Justin went up river today. We fished 4 holes upstream without getting a bite or seeing anything jump. I LET Justin hawl in 2 bag's full of bread for the bear bait station as I carried some G2 and sunflower seeds along with my bow. The bears had claimed into my stand and took everything (including my license) down to the ground and ate everything but my chair (way cool). We sat for a while then fished 1 hole on the way down. We got bored of not getting a fish or a bite so we anchored and watched me miss a pop can with my bow sitting on shore. I then went to get my arrow and as we pushed back off we saw a glimpse of a king salmon swim by the boat. Then, as we were paddling the hole one more time, one jumped just below our lines which got us excited but we were still not lucky enough to get a fish to bite.
I will fish down stream tomorrow with a group a little more serious to catch a fish. After that I will check to see if that big old black bear is eating my donuts. Later
